Soils, Stones and Water
Greywacke stones, old river channels and silt seams: why vines here work for their water.

Lift a vine in Marlborough and it hands you a river stone. The soils of the Wairau Valley are the region's least visible asset and its most important one: greywacke gravel, sorted by water over millennia, free draining to a degree that forces vines to behave, and varied enough that neighbouring blocks make recognisably different wines. Greywacke: the whole story in one stone
Nearly everything under the valley is greywacke, the hard, grey sandstone of New Zealand's mountain backbone. The Richmond Range is made of it, and the rivers have spent the whole life of the plain carrying it down and spreading it out. A Wairau vineyard stone is therefore a small piece of the mountains, rounded by its journey, and the vineyard itself is a sorted archive of ancient floods: deep gravel where the current ran fast, silt and sand where the water stood, clay where ponds settled and dried. Viticultural maps of the plain are, at root, hydrological maps of a river that no longer flows where it used to.
The stones do three jobs. They drain: water passes through gravel almost as through a sieve, and the vine's roots chase it downwards. They store heat: stone warms in the sun and returns the warmth to the canopy at night, nudging ripeness along in a cool climate. And they limit: a vine that must work for water grows a moderate canopy and concentrates its fruit, the opposite of the rank growth a rich moist soil produces. Vigour control, the quiet discipline behind the region's wine style, is built into the ground.
Three soil zones, three styles
Growers speak of the valley's ground in layers. The Rapaura gravels, the stoniest and oldest of the river's work close to its modern bed, stress the vine hardest and give the earliest, most pungent sauvignon: low vigour, small canopies, exposed fruit and the loudest aromatics in the region. The silt and loam terraces of the central plain, deeper and finer, grow fuller canopies and fuller wines, rounder fruit that a generation of canopy management has learned to keep open. The clay rich soils of the Southern Valleys and the foot of the hills, heavier and cooler, hold water longer and ripen later; they are the pinot ground, the source of the darker, more structured reds described in the pinot profile. Further afield, the Awatere's stony wind blown terraces run colder and saltier, and the Waihopai's deeper silts stretch the season later still.
None of these zones is large or pure; the river never laid its beds straight. A single vineyard can carry gravel ridges and silt hollows, and the old flood channels still read in the crop: the stony rows ripen first and are picked first. This is the honest content of the word terroir here: not mystery, but the water map of a plain, legible in the picking order each vintage, recorded in the block by block notes that vintage reports compress into single lines.
Water: the region's other river
Free draining soil and a dry climate put irrigation at the centre of Marlborough viticulture. The vines of the Wairau depend on water taken from the river itself and from the aquifer beneath the plain, the same gravel-built sponge the river charges, and the balance between what is taken and what returns is the region's longest running resource argument. The Wairau Aquifer feeds the river's low summer flows, allocation limits are contested, and the wine industry's growth has forced measurement on what was once guesswork: flow meters, soil moisture probes and deficit schedules are now ordinary equipment. The style of the wine is entangled with the argument: controlled vine stress, the practice that concentrates flavour, depends on precise irrigation, and the region's water accounting is, unknowingly to most drinkers, part of the flavour of the glass.
Two further words belong in the honest account. Nutrients leach through gravel quickly, so the region's viticulture runs on replace and measure, and the ground gives nothing for free. And salt touches the eastern edge: coastal blocks can read saline influence in the shallower ground near Cloudy Bay, one candidate explanation for the mineral, almost saline finish of some Awatere and lower Wairau wines, though the science of that tasting impression is still argued.
Organic and biodynamic ground
A dry, windy, disease light climate is the easiest place in the country to farm without sprays, and Marlborough has become the centre of New Zealand's certified organic and biodynamic viticulture, with a significant share of the region's area now under certification and several of its longest standing estates farmed that way since the 1990s. The logic is agronomic before it is philosophical: dry air means mildew pressure is manageable by canopy work and sulphur and copper, and the stony soils, already lean, suit the compost and cover crop programmes organic farming runs. Under-vine cultivation, the visible difference of an organic block, replaces herbicide strip spraying with mechanical weeding, and travelling past a cultivated block is one way a visitor identifies the farms in question. Why the ground reaches the glass
The chain from stone to flavour runs through vigour. A moderate vine ripens a moderate crop in an open canopy; open canopies mean sunlit, airy fruit, and sunlit fruit means riper aromatics and fewer green characters than shade would allow. The stones are the first cause of that moderation, the grower's shears and irrigation schedule the second, and the vintage's weather the third, which is why the same ground gives loud, tropical wines in the warm years and grapefruit tension in the cool ones, as the year by year account shows.
